"My aggressive approach to fishing came from good old dad. He worked hard to see to it we got to go fishing, He always had a “you-don’t-know-till-you-try”attitude. I remember fishing in all the conditions Minnesota can give: snow, rain, sideways rain, high winds, and high sun and a scorching boat floor. I don't recall the fish catching being as important as the overall adventure of the fishing day. It was positive and great."
For Ross, putting a smile on a young angler's face is one of the great joys of working as a fishing guide. |
Ross Hagemeister has been a full-time guide in the Ottertail Lakes area since about 1995. As a guide, Ross gets a lot of time on the water as he guide 14-15 half-day fishing trips every week. A 60 to 70 week on the water keeps him busy, but this is a great tool for keeping up with fishing patterns. Ross doesn't turn work away because he believes that the busier he is on the lake, the better the fishing will be for his parties.
Ross built his reputation as a walleye fishing guide but also guides for Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass,Crappie and Sunfish. During the winter season, Perch are a common target.

Ross loves the challenge guiding offers as much as he loves the fishing industry. In Ross' own words: "As the owner/operator, I get to form and customize my service to maximize what my clients get from it. I pride myself on my work ethic. I have a strong belief that everybody deserves my best effort and I understand that the folks getting in my boat or my fish houses have worked very hard to earn the money and time they've afforded for the guide trip. Therefore, I make sure their time and money are well spent."

Ross spends the late fall off-season prepping for his thriving ice fishing service—Ross runs 9 fish houses, guide style. In the spring off- season you can catch Ross giving fishing seminars at events or working at boat shows and open houses for Lund Boats and Mercury Motors.
